Was Matthew of Boulogne the Worst 12th Century Medieval Misogynist?


He abducted Marie, a nun, from her convent and forced her into marriage for her inheritance. She even had to bear him children before managing to escape back into monastic life.

The heroine of my upcoming historical fiction novel is Nicola de la Haye (also known as Nicholaa de la Haye, or Nicole of Nicole).

As castellan of Lincoln Castle and commander of the garrison, 'the woman who saved England' helped fight off a thirteenth century French invasion!
